Risks and Benefits of Social Media

According to Wikipedia, Social Media is information created by people using publishing technologies that facilitates communications with peers and public audiences, typically via the Internet and mobile networks. Examples of Social Media are: Blogs, Internet forums, Wikis and Facebook (Social Networking sites).

Benefits:

  • Use of existing and new technologies
  • Social skill practice
  • Creating a sense of identity
  • Social interaction w/in a community

Risks:

  • Safety
  • Bullying
  • Giving out personal information
  • Posted information on the Internet is permanent

Ideally, in an educational setting, it would be best to make decisions regarding the use of Social Media with school administrators, teachers, parents, and students. Regulations and rules should be developed for the safety of the students, so that the above risks are severely limited or non-existent. Decisions on Social Media use should be based on how the technology will be incorporated into the classroom, and daily assignments. Most importantly, no one should forget that the more we teach children what to look for and be aware of, the better we will be able to trust them to make good Social Media/Networking decisions.
